Everything on the beach: Games in planning
Discussions were held during the Association of National Olympic Committees executive Council meeting on the composition of the World Beach Games.
A final announcement on location and timing will be made after details of the project have been officially presented to the International Olympic Committee executive board meeting, to be held in early July in Lausanne.
Sheikh Ahmad, who is also president of the Olympic Council of Asia, has been a key pioneer of beach sport in the world’s largest continent, reports InsidetheGames.
He revealed earlier this year that he wanted the fourth Asian Beach Games, due to be held in Phuket in Thailand in November, to “pave the way” for the global event.
Among events expected to be included on the programme of the first World Beach Games are basketball, football, handball, rugby, tennis, beach volleyball, kiteboarding, surfing and a modified version of triathlon.
IoC President Thomas Bach was also optimistic about the event. “Talks will be held within the IOC about how it will fit into the calendar and how it fits into the discussion about the composition of the Olympic programme,” he says.

Busiest days were the day of the opening ceremony, and the following day when the figure skating team competition and women’s freestyle skiing moguls were held, reports the International Olympic Committee.
