Canterbury now part of UK retailer
Published: August 4, 2009The global Canterbury brand has been acquired by UK retail chain JD Sports from Bahrain private equity fund, Kuwait Finance House with Canterbury Australasia chief executive Scott Chapman reported as saying that current management teams and sponsorships will continue under license from the new owners.
Canterbury Australia and New Zealand will operate under an exclusive license from JD Sports with the current management team and sponsorship arrangements, including the Black Caps, the Vodafone Warriors, Wallabies, Queensland State of Origin and the eight Air New Zealand Cup rugby teams will continue.
Scott Chapman says, "With more than 400 stores throughout the UK and more than NZ$1.7 billion in turnover, JD Sports is a proven performer in sports apparel and exactly the type of owner that Canterbury needs to continue to be internationally competitive.”
Canterbury, including divisions in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, the Middle East and the United States, went on the market last month after Kuwait Finance House placed its European business into administration.
