Call to make kids' sport more fun
Published: June 3, 2013
The report, Market Segmentation for Sport Participation: Children 5-13 years old, shows how keeping organised sport fun is one of the key ways sports clubs can recruit and retain young members.
Executive director of the Australian Sporting Goods Association, Shannon Walker, said “Australian and international research shows us that kids will only remain engaged in sport if it is age-appropriate and fun.”
This Australian research backs up the international findings of the Designed to Move project, which calls on all policy-makers to ‘Create early positive experiences for children (in sport and PE).’
“If the choices are boring, kids will choose something more sedentary every time.”
Designed to Move is an international physical activity action agenda that brings together health professionals, university researchers, sports scientists, sporting organisations and educators from around the world.
Says Shannon Walker, “We strongly encourage sports clubs at all levels to take note of this research and use its findings to increase participation and retain young members.”
